"Development" challenges from global to local level as theme of the 3rd European Development Days

The European Development Days (EDD) brought together the whole development sector from Heads of State to NGOs and experts. The discussions and proposals covered global challenges such as the financial crisis and the G20, and the food crisis. However, this event also dealt with local challenges such as the significance of local authorities for combating poverty and launched the European Charter on development cooperation in support of local governance. Representatives from the main families of European players who contributed to the development of this Charter were present.

European Development Days (EDD) 2008: The local dimension of development

From the 15th to the 17th of November the European Development Days (EDD) will take place in Strasbourg (France). The main theme will be the local development policy. The Service Agency Communities in One World will offer the following events: "Local Development Cooperation in Germany: Concepts, Strategies and External Support" and in cooperation with Cités Unies France (CUF) "Cooperation and Local Governments - Synergy of European Actors".

European Commission calls for greater role for Europe's local authorities in development action

The Commission today proposed for an increased dialogue with local authorities aimed at increasing their participation in the design and implementation of development activities. The Commission believes that local action is at the core of development policy. A structured dialogue is considered key since an increasing number of municipalities, districts and regions are increasingly financing their own development projects. World Mayors and Local Governments Climate Protection Agreement

During the UN Climate talks in Bali in December 2007 UCLG, ICLEI, the C40 Group and the World Mayors Council for Climate Change started the World Mayors and Local Governments Climate Protection Agreement. The agreement reaffirms the will of local governments to accept the challenge and co-responsibility to take action to prevent the dangerous effects of climate change and calls upon national authorities to support local governments by providing adequate mandates resources and international instruments to achieve the common goals. The broadest possible number of signatories to the agreement would also be a clear signal of the recognition that local governments should get in the process between Bali and Copenhagen.

The Service Agency Communities in One World assigned a research project with the German Development Institute (GDI) on local development policy. Till end of 2008 the project partners want to investigate the bases of development policy of German cities, municipalities and districts. Cities and Biodiversity: Bonn Call for Action

Local governments offer true partnership for biodiversity
On Wednesday (28 May 2008) the participants of the international Mayors Conference "Local Action for Biodiversity" passed the "Bonn call for Action". The Bonn Call outlines the willingness of local government to offer their experience and their influence to strengthen and promote the implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity within a global and multilevel partnership. Today the results of the conference were brought to the attention of the Highlevel Segment of COP 9. The mayors Takehisa Matsubara of Nagoya, Gerald Tremblay of Montreal, Carlos Alberto Richa of Curitiba and Bärbel Dieckmann of Bonn addressed the COP delegates on behalf of local governments. This concerns also the acknowledgment of the municipalities as important partners for national governments and international organizations.
